
Dr James McCune Smith First African American Doctor
Dr James McCune Smith was born in Manhattan New York on April 18, 1813. He was the first African American to receive a medical degree at the University of Glasgow in Glasgow Scotland.
He was also the first African American in the nation to run a pharmacy. For almost twenty years he practiced at the Colored Orphan Asylum. He went on to write for numerous journals in his medical field.
In 1853 he helped start the National Council of Colored People. On Nov 17, 1865 he passed away in Long Island New York.
Venturing to do something that you love can be hard sometimes. There will be trials and tribulations along the way. But the main thing is the journey to your greatness. It all starts with you starting.
